Four regions in Illinois have clear links to defense based on the presence of key military assets (e.g. bases, training facilities), high concentration of manufacturers, or both.

Chicagoland

  • 1,360 establishments with at least 1 DOD contract
  • $5.3 billion in DOD sales
  • 80% of total State DOD spending
  • Home of the Army Research Lab Central
  • Home of Naval Station Great Lakes (NSGL)
    • The Navy’s largest training installation
    • More than 20,000 sailors, Marines, soldiers, and DOD civilians live and work on the installation
  • Increased Illinois’ gross domestic product by $4.6 billion.

Greater Peoria Region

  • 75 establishments with at least 1 DOD contract
  • $240 million in DOD sales
  • 3.7% of total State DOD spending
  • Home of 182nd Airlift Wing of the Illinois National Guard
    • Maintains and operates eight C-130 Hercules aircraft

Quad Cities

  • 169 establishments with at least 1 DOD contract
  • $178 million in DOD sales
  • 2.6% of total State DOD spending
  • Home of U.S. Army Garrison Rock Island Arsena
    • Employs more than 6,000 military, civilian, and contractor personnel
    • RIA-Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (JMTC) - largest government-owned manufacturing facility in the U.S.
    • United States Army Center of Excellence for Additive Manufacturing
    • $1.2 billion annual economic impact

Rockford Region

  • 54 establishments with at least 1 DOD contract
  • $315 million in DOD sales
  • 2.7% of total State DOD spending
